JACKIE KIRK, a 22 year-old ex-television child actress arrives in the mid-west all the way from California. She is ready to explore new options and exercise a sense of independence that had thus far been lacking in her life. Her greatest wish is to blend in with her peers which proves to be difficult at times as she fields the endless parade of stares and questions about “Neptune 26,” the popular sci-fi show she was once a part of. Jackie has not been away from her family since the show ended four years prior. Although she is not exactly close to her parents, being alone for the first time is nonetheless an overwhelming experience.
During a psychology department mixer Jackie meets CATHERINE STARK, a mysterious teacher in her early thirties with an infamous “lady-killer” reputation. In spite of warnings she received from other students, Jackie falls for Catherine’s charm and the two outsiders begin an instantly intense relationship.
Through the course of the school year their bond grows stronger and more personal until suddenly Jackie is faced with the chance to audition for a feature film version of her now defunct television show. The prospect of attempting a comeback into the ultra-competitive world of show business is at first daunting to Jackie but after much soul searching she decides to accept the challenge. Armed with renewed self-confidence and a few new insights she picked up courtesy of her psych studies, Jackie decides to give it her all and fight to reclaim her old role.
However, her possible return to the spotlight quickly turns into a life-lesson of its own for both student and teacher. Catherine finds that her illicit behavior, once mostly unnoticed, is now attracting unwanted attention and therefore putting her job security in jeopardy. As for Jackie, she finds that discovering her life’s passion and charting her own course might also mean having to say goodbye to her first true love.
